‘Wastewater’ is ‘wastewater that’s been wasted’, says the Greens

Greens Senator Larissa Waters says the Government is “spending taxpayer money on waste water” and the Greens are calling for a “Wastewater Review”.
“It’s an unnecessary waste of taxpayer money,” Senator Waters said.
“The Government has wasted more than $1 billion on waste and I don’t think we need another $1.3 billion on water and waste water in the future.”
She said the Government should consider “a Waste Water Review” and suggested it should be an “ongoing, ongoing review”.
The Greens also want the Government to consider a $500,000 loan to the Queensland Water Resources Agency (QWRA) for “new technologies” that could be used to improve the quality of wastewater treatment.
Water Minister Steven Miles said the government was “looking at a range of technologies” to reduce the amount of waste in the system.
“The question is whether the technology is appropriate and it is not,” he said.
Ms Waters said it was important the Government consider the use of “hybrid systems” and not just the traditional methods of treating wastewater.
She also called for an end to the Government’s “doubling up” of the wastewater treatment system.
The Greens also wanted the Government and QWRA to implement a “wastewaters pricing” system that would allow for “unlimited” prices for wastewater that could then be “shared” among the local community.
In a statement, QWRI director of policy, Steve Kranz said the “waste water review” was “important and timely”.
“Wastes that have been produced in the treatment system, which includes a range and levels of waste, can be managed and recycled in the local economy,” he told the ABC.
He said the review was a way for the Government “to take forward its plans for the waste water system” and he was “disappointed” it had not yet been completed.
